Make it so, let it snow

The snow has arrived in England, all 2 inches of it - which means general panic, cars breaking down, trains not running and much amusement from the rest of the world where it snows properly.
We've been watching cars trying to get up our hill all morning with varying levels of success.

Before you laugh too hard, remember we do only have snow once every couple of years or so, and don't have things like snow ploughs or chains or special tyres.

And because I love this, here's Captain Picard.

Of course that's when I'm visiting London! Winter Wonderland only is fun when there's actual winter and not this snow/rain thing you call snow.

This is as good as it gets, mostly. Slush is our default! Hope it doesn't disrupt your travels home!

I feel your pain. I'm originally from Alabama and I now live in Seattle, and, of the two, Birmingham tends to get more snow and some pretty bad ice storms. However, neither really gets a lot of snow, and when it comes, there is a general freak out. Two inches is a disaster, even though people here go skiing in the mountains about 2 hours away. You'd think they'd be used to it, but apparently not.

Ha ha people are the same the world over, huh.

Just talked to my mom. They got 5-8" yesterday, were actually snowed in, and about 40,000 people lost power. However, it should all be melted by tomorrow.

Where's your mum based again? Mine's had about 8 inches in Shrewsbury - impressive for us. :D

Birmingham. The one in Alabama. Named for yours, because of the iron and steel industry.

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
Ah yes, i'm sure you told me that before. Actually our Birmingham was more known for its canals, and manufacturing buttons, guns and jewellery than steel - Sheffield is/was our big steel city.

We all collectively laughed when Georgia and Alabama got snow and freaked out about it, but I *remember* what it's like to not have any damned idea how to deal with snow. I grew up just outside San Francisco, for God's sake. It's still funny as hell, though.

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 10:07 am (UTC)(link)
It is funny (but also frustrating LOL)

I was just starting to laugh when I came to the part about you not having snow ploughs or special tyres. Man, that sucks and I totally understand the panic. We had a LOT of snow too, but it has stopped for now. Hopefully you won't get much more!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 10:08 am (UTC)(link)
We've not had much here and it's mostly melted already, but where my mum lives they've had a lot more.

Aw, doesn't it look pretty! And thanks for the vid, I've never seen it before, very funny, especially the tea, Earl Grey, bit!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Hee! that vid cracks me up.

We've just had freezing sleet here - thankfully nothing's settling, and I really hope it stays that way!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
We onto the freezing sleet today, and most of the snow has gone - Mum's had about 8-9 inches though!

I'm so jealous of all this snow! Up here in my area of Cumbria we have none, it's just cold (about -8 today, but heading for double figures tonight I think!)

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Ours turned pretty slushy today which is going to make things a bit perilous when it all freezes overnight!

[identity profile] milly-gal.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha, it's now officially snowed hee instead of trying to, which in all fairness, when it snows it SNOWS! So we shall be enjoying the morons trying to drive our road at ass-speeds and crashing into trees and hedges O.o lol! Cool pics hun :) Also, Picard, I love thee so!

[identity profile] hugemind.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, snow only every couple of years? I think I would miss it if I moved to a place like that. However, it is kind of fun to secretly laugh at people when they break out the umbrellas here even when it's snowing pretty dry snow. :) We got maybe like 2-3" of snow on Sunday, but it turned into rain late in the evening and today it has rained all day, so nothing remains.

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-12-11 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Some parts of the country get snow even less often than that. Though climate change is gradually making our winters a bit harsher.
