S07 E19 Spoilery Reaction post

I've only watched once and that was interrupted by hubby (dammit) but overall I enjoyed this one for a number of reasons.

  • I loved the boys throughout.  They were very relaxed (well for them anyway) and very together, and the scene in the restaurant was a good example of this, as was the bathroom conversation being held through the open door.  Lots of little touches that just spoke of them being at ease with each other in a way they haven't been for a very long time.  Me likee.
  • I liked the way the writers spun this story as a case belonging to Annie that the boys are caught up in.  I really liked the ghost perspectives - both Annie's and Bobby's.  It gave the episode a bit more depth than a straightforward ghost case.
  • Bobby!
  • Annie was a cool character, and I liked how she gave Bobby a bit of a talking to about his curious choice to stay.
I was left with a few questions though, like:
  • why don't Sam and Dean use the phone camera trick when the EMF is being unhelpful but it is clear there are ghosts around?  Hollywood Babylon anyone?
  • How come no reaper came for Annie?  That seemed strange given SPN reaper lore.  It seems she was left behind with no choice in the matter.
  • Why didn't Bobby and Annie at least consider trying to leave a ghost voice mail for the boys after Victoria explains how she did that for Annie?
I gather some folk were slagging Dean off about his angry reaction to Bobby being back - well duh!  Of course he was angry, and upset.  As was made very clear throughout this episode, ghost stories never end well, and both Dean and Sam are well aware of this fact - hence the sad tense little conversation between the two of them towards the end in the car.  They know they will have to do something, and that is going to be hard, because they LOVE Bobby.  Getting rid of his ghost will be like losing him all over again, and however it is done, it is going to hurt all of them.  The best they can hope for is a walk into the light, like Molly in Roadkill.

Well, now we'll have to wait and see how the show handles this one, as well as Getting Dick.

In the meantime, at least we have the shower scene and the tousled hair scene to tide us over and soothe our troubles...

That gif of Dean with wet hair and "styling" it is adorable - boy styles the way I do. ;)

Also? About this: I gather some folk were slagging Dean off about his angry reaction to Bobby being back - well duh! Of course he was angry, and upset. As was made very clear throughout this episode, ghost stories never end well, and both Dean and Sam are well aware of this fact - doesn't anyone remember... oh the ENTIRE S2 ARC? "What's Dead Should Stay Dead." So, yeah, I get why Dean was angry and upset. Poor boy was probably dealing with so many emotions - both good and bad - and the knowledge that What's Dead Should Stay Dead (he should know...) - and it was all compounded by the fact he knows HE is going to have to be the one to do something.

Zactly. It's not like this isn't something SPN have made clear from the start, and it has been totally consistent throughout - from Tessa's explanations every time she's appeared, to Dean's reactions to the various sacrifices, to Death's observations about the natural order - He even had Dean spend a day being Death to get the point across!
And even if they had managed to forget all of that, there were plenty of baseball bats to the head in this episode to remind them how it works!

It was actually Dean being Death For A Day that I was really thinking about as was Tessa's gentle but sure explanations each time she's appeared. But... yeah. It really boils down to Dean wrestling with the truth of What's Dead Should Stay Dead and the whole knowledge that HE is the one who's going to have to do something and no matter what he chooses, it's going to kill him.

Dean's getting grief about not being thrilled that Bobby didn't move on? *shakes head*

I was wondering about the camera thing too. I wasn't crazy about Bobby constantly putting them down, but that was a little dumb.

I don't know. I just didn't connect with Annie as a character or a hunter.

All in all, I liked the boys in this one, but that was about it. Another gypped shower scene with just Dean's head and arm in view, though I did like that hair touseling bit!

It's funny - even in bland CWLand, I bet if Dean had been a woman they'd have shown some sort of outline/shadow of a body behind the shower curtain - in fact when you think about it, even on SPN they've shown more naked flesh in women's shower scenes before than we got there!
Dammit, why can't they pander to us a bit more? I don't mind a bit of pandering....

LOL, Jared probably would have given us full frontal. Jensen, unfortunately, refuses to be objectified, the bastard.

IKR? And now my friends on FB want me to ask him next week if he shaves his armpits. I wonder why he won't expose more of his body to our scrutiny?

Dammit, Show, HIRE A MYTHOS CONTINUITY PERSON!

I wasn't quite as jazzed by the episode as you were, but I did adore the brotherly moments in the restaurant and the shower (totes agree with you on the "if Dean'd been a woman" thing, stupid CW.) I liked the idea of Annie, but not the casting. She felt stilted and unconnected to the guys, not charming enough to be 'a playah', IMHO.

Speaking of Annie, her reaper might not have arrived yet because of 'unfinished business' (the kids she eventually helped send along.) Your other quibbling points stand strong, though.

I wish everything had been more ominous and scary, like the earlier seasons, but again I think that's the CW crying about a lack of pretty colors. They like things all bright and sparkly. SPN deserves grit and tension. I haven't been truly creeped out by the show in a good five years. Bring back the spooky, babies!

True, there is a dearth of true spook. And I did like the washed out cooler colour treatments, it gave the show a more unique flavour.

I wasn't blown away by my first viewing, but I enjoyed it - a lot of the episodes this season have been like this - the first 2-3 blew me away and then after that most of them have been good (solid) but not great. I feel I am coasting along, very pleasantly. It's a bit like a nice long soak in a bubble bath - not a romp in a stormy sea.

The shower part was not long enough and the tussle hair was too cute!
