Updatey ramblings and old photos

I have some backup access, though sadly my external drives haven't been updated very recently... dammit. My online auto-backups show 1 million files backed up but I can only access ones in folders from 2015 - not very useful. I'm waiting for the company to come back to me on this issue - I'm assured it can be fixed. We'll see! In the meantime, the Apple retailer have pronounced a time of death for my hard drive and said if I get an Apple replacement then I don't get my old hard drive back to take to a data recovery specialist. However, if I can get my backups online, then I probably don't need to try and salvage anything anyway. Argh.

My ex work colleague is a Mac expert, and tells me I should replace the drive with a solid state one, and he could do that for me. Since the machine is out of warranty, I'd have nothing to lose. So tomorrow afternoon I'm going to pop into the local shop and see if they can put in a SSD instead and how much they'd charge me. If it's too much dosh, I'm going to get Jim to do it for me and buy the drive on Amazon.

In the meantime, I've installed a trial version of Photoshop CC to tide me over while I'm using my Mum's laptop she kindly lent me. I have no idea how people manage to work on iPads - I NEED laptop functionality! Even though these new Macbooks are a pain in the arse not having old style USB ports or any other interfaces apart from the stupid thunderthingy. So I've had to buy an add on with two USB ports so I can use my Wacom tablet, charge my phone etc.

Oops that went on longer than I intended. I really came on to post a few old photos I found and to give y'all a good laugh.
My wedding day, way way back in the mists of time, when I was half the woman I am now.

I mean, flippin' heck, where did I store my internal organs?
That was the infamously expensive wedding cake - £17 and Paul is still traumatised by the cost. We actually cut it, not realising you were just supposed to pretend to do the deed - so it had a diagonal cut in the corner which made it hard to divvy up to hand out pieces to the guests. Plus the knife was brand new and had some sort of grease on it, so it left black marks on the icing! Ha ha ha!  Still got the knife though.

It still tickles me that our table was a pasting table for wallpaper, and had to be propped up in the middle with some steps and books, and our table cloth was a lace curtain.

So yeah, I was young once. LOL

Oh, the laptop stuff totally sucks. I feel your pain and you inspired me to back up my laptop again (I back up to a hard drive by time machine), I should add it to the network so it will back up all the time. I have to look at that Ugh! I can attest to the wonderfulness of solid state drives though. They are so efficient it's like getting a ram boost as well as probably a bit more room on your laptop. And they don't heat up as much as a traditional apple drive does. Hopefully, you can recover your data, but I'd hang onto the old drive just in case. Or stall until you can find out for sure. You also remind me I need to buy one of those USB thingy's because I have the same problem, I can't plug in my mouse and my phone charger at the same time. Ugh!

And the wedding shots are super sweet. I love the colour on these older Kodachrome photos, so distinctive. You both look super happy : )

Heh heh poor Paul was having kittens about the wedding - he is a real gamophobe! But on the day it was actually fun, and because we didn't do the whole big ceremonial thing, he enjoyed it.

Yes! back up all the things! My Mac-friend is now telling me off for failing to do it properly, and I have to agree with him...

Hey, you were lovely then, and you're still lovely ... SO THERE. (RIP your computer. I feel this right to the bottom of my soul. SORRY, BB.)

you and paul were so young and adorable! i would've actually cut into the cake too. i thought that's what you were supposed to do, altho to be fair i've never been married and i clearly didn't pay very close attention at weddings i've been to. either that or they didn't make a big deal out of cutting the cake....

i cross my fingers for your hard drive! that sucks.

yes, young and adorable in those days... He he he!

Oh no! Time of Death officially called for your computer. [Mourns with you.]

And lovely wedding photos. You and Paul really were the cutest young things back then! :) Lol at £17 being a lot for a wedding cake! You'd probably pay almost that for a slice these days!!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2018-09-03 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
Ha ha £17 was cheap back then too, he just couldn't get his head round it. Just as well I didn't want the full wedding works, that would have just about killed him. As it was, we had a great day without worrying about how much it cost. I think overall with the license, cake, rings and a new dress it came in at c£100. Bargain!

Ugh, computer issues - first world problems, yes, but still an upheaval you can do without.
I hope you can get everything fixed and all your data restored without too much trauma to the bank account!

Yikes your poor computer!!! Fingers crossed that you can access your older files.

And I love your wedding pics - it sure looks like you had a great day!!!

Lovely pictures! You were such a cute couple :)))) Without the proof of pics, I wouldn't believe that you actually could have been smaller than you are now, you hobbit :DDD

I hope you can access your old files somehow - losing things to a disk failure is very depressing. *crosses fingers* I just got a new laptop with an SSD + "a regular HDD" where the HDD is for photos and stuff that just accumulates. Large SSDs are still a bit expensive so HDDs are still a cheaper way to add storage space. I do irregular back ups when I think that I have enough new files or before leaving for a longer trip. The hard disk in my first laptop failed so it scared me into being pretty diligent about it.

The wedding pictures (and the story) are cute! :D
