More Clarence

This lion is killing me! LOL. I did some painting yesterday but today decided I really need to get him up in the air a bit so I can paint the underneath bits and the insides of his legs without having to lie on the floor. So that meant searching around for something to prop him up on - not easy when his legs are so spaced out, and his feet so massive! Anyhow, we had some work done yonks ago which meant some original Victorian quarry tiles were taken up, and we saved them because they might come in useful one day. Today was that day! I brushed off as many as I could find that didn't have too much gunk adhering to their bases, and voila. Clarence is now about 8-9 inches higher off the floor than before.

As a result, I have been able to paint foliage, and more foliage, and also make a start on the bonus tree frog and orangutan. There was however, still much painful crawling, kneeling and sitting on the floor - which was accompanied by an unseemly amount of grunting, groaning and swearing. Lady I am not.
Here's the result of my labours.

He's still awkward to get to and as a result a bit weird-looking but never mind. The tree frog is also not quite what I wanted but hopefully will look ok by the time I've finished.

I am quite pleased with the plants though. Which is just as well as they are probably about half of the coverage.

Colonel Hathi and Mowgli are almost done

So are Akela and Bagheera

Now I'm having a sit down and a rest.

You have earned your sit down and rest! He's looking gorgeous. I'm kind of in love with the clouds near Baloo.

Wow! This is wonderful! Can you come to my library and paint the walls? My kids would love this!

hee! I'd love to try a proper mural. I did two panels on a built in wardrobe in our first house but they were relatively small. :)

I'm loving the theme you're painting the lion with so, so much! LOOKING GOOD!

He's looking great. Now you're getting some detail in, he's really taking shape. You've got Colonel Hathi to a Tee!

I know what it's like creating something big where there's a lot of kneeling and bending involved, it feels like a thorough workout. On the plus side, Michaelangelo painted the entire Sistine Chapel lying on his back - at least you haven''t got to do that!!!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-04-13 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
How the hell Michelangelo managed that I have no idea. I think he was a bit younger than me at the time though, that probably helped! Mind you, he was a tough nut. He was still sculpting in his eighties.

So what did you do that was so physical?

[identity profile] dizzojay.livejournal.com 2017-04-13 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I painted a couple of big things for different projects. One was a ten feet tall plywood Santa for a local leisure centre years ago. He was lying on the floor when I painted him (2 days work) so it was all hands and knees stuff.
The other was a similar size, One of those picture boards with a hole in it that you put your face through to have a photo taken. That was for the charity I used to work for. That was a more intricate image so took about 3 days and it was stood up against a wall so I was up and down a stepladder all day!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-04-13 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah right, a ten foot Santa would do it alright! LOL! Got any photos of your finished creations?

[identity profile] dizzojay.livejournal.com 2017-04-14 10:56 am (UTC)(link)
The charity picture is here at my website: (Looking at the picture, I think it's probably nearer 8 foot than 10 foot high (unless I've suddenly sprouted a couple of feet in height!) LOL

The Santa was done early 90's in the pre-internet days. I do have some paper photos in albums floating around somewhere, but not too sure where right now!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-04-14 11:01 am (UTC)(link)
Ha that's great! Did you use acrylics?

[identity profile] dizzojay.livejournal.com 2017-04-14 11:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, acrylics and the whole things was coated in yacht varnish to rain-prooif it!

you should put some designs in for these Wild in Art projects - you have experience!

Turning the lion base into a tiger peeking through the leaves is seriously the best idea ever! The plants do indeed look great. I also love the swirly clouds and the position of every character; my absolute favorite bit is the snake. So much work, lady, I'm super impressed.

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-04-13 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Kaa turned out better than I thought though his face is weird, I need to do something about that. Thanks, me dear!

Sometimes it's just glorious to see what my friends are doing outside our shared fandom! Thanks for inviting us in to look: this is awesome!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2017-04-13 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
i suppose this is the most interesting non fandom thing I've been involved in for a very long time! LOL

This is spectacular! I can see the effort you're putting in, but trust me from the exterior it looks amazing.

Thanks for the encouragement! The standard for these critters is high, I worry about measuring up. :D
