Art spam

I never caught up with Inktober, so I think I'll just keep the prompt list and gradually fill up my little book as I get inspired. In the meantime, my weekly sketchbooking course continues. This week there was no class because it's half term, so I met up with Debbie, the lady I first met on the free walking sketching day.

We decided to go to Christchurch Mansion (it's a 15th/16th century mansion house in a park in the centre of town) and do some sketching there. We'd forgotten it's school holidays, but it wasn't too busy, just a few families with little kids wandering around, and nobody bothered us. I sat upstairs - there's a kind of musician's gallery at the end of the Great Hall, and I'd thought I'd draw the hall from above, but that would have meant standing up and I'm too lazy for that. So I sat on the floor and drew the door onto the balcony instead. That's on the left.

Then I went down into the Great Hall and drew one of the statues in one of the niches, which is on the right.
those doors are interesting - there are at least two like that in the house, one upstairs and one downstairs leading from the Great Hall to the main staircase. They both have the rounded top part which also opens like a stable door, and I can't think why. What purpose would they have served? neither of them would ever have led outside the house, and I don't recall ever seeing anything quite like this anywhere else. If anyone has seen them or something similar anywhere else, do let me know!

These bird pics, on the other hand, are from last week's course - we were looking at creating pictures using blocks of colour, avoiding detail, and looking at composition using thirds and halves. This stuff is so far outside my comfort zone! LOL I was uncomfortable drawing the first version (on the left) but then I thought sod it, I'll push myself even farther out, and I got out the felt tip pens. Hence the parrots instead of birds of prey - and that will teach me to copy my own drawing instead of looking at the source reference again. I realise now I got the beaks quite wrong on the multicoloured version. Hah. Hindsight.

I do actually like the pale one (which is gouached over pencil) and think I should perhaps have cropped it a bit more like this (oh the beauty of photoshop...!)

Anyway. Art spam over, back to PS and my RBB early bird entry!
