Crowley - what exactly is he?
I know Mark Sheppard is continually winding fans up by pointing out that Crowley has never shown any evidence of being a Crossroads demon - or any other kind of demon that we know of for that matter - because the show has never let us see his eyes change to black, red, yellow or white.
Then in the finale, I noticed that Crowley was making things happen by clicking his fingers. And we all know who was the last person we saw doing that, don't we? Yup, Gabriel aka the Trickster. I can't recall without checking whether Crowley has done this before, or whether it was something new, but that has got me thinking about what Crowley could be, if he isn't a demon...and what that might mean for Dean in Purgatory, or Sam fighting the left over Leviathans.
More fun speculation, eh?

First- In 'Family Matters' Crowley disappears and we hear angel wings - now granted this could have also been a hint at Castiel's invisible presence, but still..
Second - I've always believed Azazel himself was a fallen angel - I mean look up his name in the lore! In the anime he is an angel in canon. I think the rulers of Hell either have to be angels, or appointed by Lucifer. Lilith and Azazel were both Lucifer's disciples.
This supports the idea that Crowley has just been pretending to be a demon - for starters, he just isn't that old. There have to be millions of demons older ( and thus in theory stronger) than him. So why is he the king? Because he isn't who or what he says he is.

But certainly there is more to Crowley than meets the eye!

And I want to keep the wing sound in Family Matters as Cas in my headcanon, because it would make me happy to think the writers were giving that clue in such a subtle way.
