Fanfic appreciation meme!
Ok, by the time I post this it will be more than a day late for Fanfic Appreciation Day, but I don't think that really matters - if a fic is good it's not going to lose its lustre if I rec it late!
frozen_delight started this and I stole it from
anactoria. Got to say, making a rec post against these criteria is HARD! Picking just one for each category? Nigh on impossible. Regardless, here's the list, followed by my recs.
Recs:
1. An old fic (posted at least three years ago). I've gone for At Grass by
de_nugis for no other reason than I'd actually remembered to stick it in my LJ memories, and I was re-reading another of hers on the train today. Well, no other reason than I love the gentle, loving and perfectly in character way she writes our boys. Plus bonus judgemental alpacas, chaps!

1. an old fic (posted at least three years ago)
2. a new fic (posted within the last six months)
3. a fic you wish had gotten more attention (less than 50 kudos on AO3 or less than 30 comments on LJ)
4. a genfic
5. a fic focused on a female character
6. a fic which made you see a character in a new light
7. a fic which made you ship something
8. a fic which inspired you to write
9. a fic with a particularly memorable line
10. ??? (Excited to see what categories you come up with!)

2. A new fic (posted within the last six months). Ack! So frigging hard. Ok, random pick from a bunch of awesome, how about this poignant summergen that made me cry. 491 by Unknown. So beautiful and true. I'm looking forward to finding out who wrote it...
3. A fic you wish had gotten more attention (less than 50 kudos on AO3 or less than 30 comments on LJ). Mmm there are rather a lot of these but there's this wonderful series I found relatively recently on AO3 that don't seem to have anywhere near the number of kudos or comments the series deserves. Five Districts, Five Drugs by rei_c. This is a haunting, clever, atmospheric, a retelling of the same story in different ways. The basic premise is that Sam is magic and taking drugs to deal with it, and then Dean comes to find him at Stanford. (I have to assume, as it's been around for so long, that on LJ it has tons of feedback, so maybe I shouldn't post it here?).
4. A genfic. I could rec virtually anything written for summergen! But that would be cheating, and besides, I've already recced one summergen. I have a weakness for amnesia-fics so how about this one Our Troubles will be Miles Away from
sw0rdy, which combines amnesiac Dean with another fave trope of mine, an outsider POV. it's a bit seasonally inappropriate but who cares.
5. A fic focused on a female character. This is difficult for me because I do tend to gravitate towards the Sam and Dean or J2 focussed stories... but there is this one I saved a while ago - Gethsemane by electrumqueen sees Anna still alive in a Season 5 The End AU. She bumps into Castiel and they get drunk, contemplating the end of the world. It's kind of awesome. Mind you, I'll be trawling other folk's recs to see if anyone's got an Ellen fic I haven't read.
6. A fic which made you see a character in a new light. This could be almost any fic that focusses on a character that isn't Sam or Dean, really, though there have been planty of fics over the years that have opened windows to their souls too. But I'm going for one that I know everyone recced at the time, but it was for good reason. Acting as Mom by ameliacareful. It was a fic that really made me think about Mary Winchester in a way that the show hadn't. The best kind of fanifc!
7. A fic which made you ship something. Ok, this is actually easy because
balder12 has written several fics now and made me beleive Sam/Kevin could be a thing when I'd never considered it before! So I'll go with this one - Little Spoon. Damn you balder12, I never even wanted to like this pairing! LOL
8. A fic which inspired you to write. I could cite any number of fics here (including some above!) so I'll pick one of each from three writers who always seem to spark ideas in my head while I'm reading - either from the glorious language they use or from their amazingly fertile imaginations. Firstly Dry Salvages by
kalliel. Second Speak of the Devil by
indiachick. And thirdly Little Monsters in the Tide by
dear_tiger. All of them also make me want to draw stuff and wish I could write much better than my limited capability!
9. A fic with a particularly memorable line. I have HUGE difficulties with this one because I don't actually remember things. What I tend to remember is an impression of a story, the emotions, the excitement, the fact that I loved it. I don't tend to remember details like the plot, let alone a single line. That doesn't mean brilliant, well crafted, funny, insightful lines don't hit me at the time - they do, and I love them. But I couldn't point to a single one without reading my reviews or whole fics all over again.
10. Free category rec - as I've kind of covered "fics I wish I'd written" in nearly every one of the recs so far, I'll go for one of the first stories that really hooked me on SPN fanfic, and eased me into the glories of slash too. Strangers in Gilead by
corvus_imbrifer. It's another fave trope if mine since I was a kid - time travel, combined with Westerns, with a 3rd party POV slapped on top. Perfect.

I share your love for "At Grass", by the way - those homophobic alpacas can make me smile any day. :)

I have followed along, but more at a distance. I keep thinking I'll have a marathon catch-up to be there for the last episode, but apparently it's going to go on forever. (Good for them, to be sure.)
Perhaps what I should do is go read more, that will get me me fired up. I shall start with your recommendations right here.

And I hear you on the SPN effect. I've been a fan of shows before but nothing else stirred my creative muse like this one - I'm not even sure why, exactly...
