I have a set of spongey grips Mama got me, which I use a lot, they're hilarious, they make you feel like you're holding something - else ;) And I have pens with rubber grips on them.
My issue is with strength and positioning, so for instance I've always drawn at a funny angle to the page, I write the same too, most people spin the page a touch, I kind of draw upside down or at a 90 degree angle to anything I'm drawing on, and then my fingers/wrist lose strength and the pen/pencil just stops being usable.
I don't know how to explain - have you ever had one of those moments where your hand just does it's own thing and you drop something, like your fingers open on their own? That's what happens to me if my hand's have been overworked or are particularly achey.
