Dad update again

Thank you once again for all your good thoughts and hugs, you lovely bunch. I am much happier today having seen the old boy face to face. He's very wobbly but MUCH better than I'd feared. His movement is reasonable, he doesn't have that drastic one side thing that strokes so often cause, but his speech-centre has been hit quite badly, especially as he got more and more tired. But - perky enough, out of bed sitting up and relatively alert.
Evidence!

Of course the daft bugger had managed to get out of bed and try to walk to the toilet on his own this morning - got as far as the third bed before falling over and hitting his head on something. As if he needs any more blows to the head. Who does he think he is - a Winchester?

Oh and if any of my medical experts are reading this - any idea what Glasgow coma scores of 14, 13 and 15 might signify? His blood pressure they took while we were there was 133/66.

Hopefully there will be some doctors there tomorrow for us to ask some questions and find out what their long term prognosis is.

Aww, glad he's doing okay. :)

I'm glad things are looking more hopeful. I'm continuing to send all good thoughts your way. It's always hard to know whether to be encouraged or exasperated when parents go right on being stubborn in times of illness.

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2015-04-19 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's both, don't you? :D

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2015-04-19 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not getting over excited, but it's looking a tad more hopeful!

Oh yay! Glad to hear he's during better!

I am very relieved you're feeling more hopeful ♥ hope you get more answers tomorrow. I really like that pic, he looks quite perky!

So glad for the update. He's looking awesome! As for the Glasgow scale, that sounds like a pretty high score, which means he's doing great. And a BP of those values pratically makes him a teenage boy. All the best for his continous speedy recovery!

He looks great! What a trooper. So happy for you all! Keep up the great (albeit stubborn) work, pops!

So, so happy to see him up and looking chipper! I hope that his recovery continues without anything standing in its way. <33333 Thanks for updating us, and I hope you're all doing well and taking care of yourselves, too.

I'm so glad to hear that things are going better. I'll continue to keep my fingers crossed.

Ahh this is good news, I am glad that things have improved. Still sending good wishes, I hope he continues to get even better <3

Your dad is like a force of nature. You need to bungee cord him to the bed. :)

Sooooooo glad he's up and about.

[identity profile] etrix.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's good that he's doing better than expected, but not good that he's pushing himself so hard. Maybe telling him they'll let him out sooner if he doesn't injure himself will convince him to let them help. (It might work. Maybe?)

Best of luck to everyone. Make sure you take care of yourself, too.

That's such good news! Here's hoping he makes a speedy recovery. :)

Yup the Glasgow Coma Scale is used to assess a patient's level of consciousness by their response to stimuli (to test for neurologic functioning). It's broken in three categories

1) Eye Opening (up 4 points)

2) Verbal Response (up to 5 points)

and 3) Motor Response (up to six points)

Basically, patients get points depending on whether or not they can do certain things. Such as, if your eyes are open on your own, you get full points for Eye Opening.

Scores range from 3-15 (3 being the lowest, 15 being eyes open, alert and oriented and able to obey motor commands--i.e, reach for the bedrail. Anything else it's impossible to say, it just depends on what category they didn't give him a point or two for.

Anyways, wait and see is really the name of the game with a hemorrhagic stroke. Will hope that things continue to improve!

♥ ♥

That is great news about your Dad. Not so great about him trying to move on his own and falling -- man, old folks are stubborn! -- but good news that he seems to be recovering well. He certainly looks perky!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, that's good to know! Thanks!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the info - I gave myself a refresher on it last night too because the only reason I'd heard of it before was for fanfic research re: Winchester concussion!

Yep, wait and see is the name of the game - I'm trying to prepare my Mum for the idea that he may need to have a bed downstairs when he comes home!

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
Fingers crossed!

It's great that he's sitting up out of bed already! My mum had the clot stroke around 6 years ago now and she wasn't out of bed for nearly a week. Her speech was affected too and it takes time but I'm sure you'll see an improvement every day, especially when the physiotherapists start working with him, he should get a speech therapist too. In the mean time, I hope you can persuade him to make sure someone is around to be his dance partner so he doesn't fall and hit his head again doing the tango!

Mum was in Telford and although we very rarely saw a doctor they had excellent' teams' of stroke specialists all working together who could answer most questions honestly, but time is a huge factor in these things, patients react in such different ways depending on their own health, support and determination.

All the best to you.

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 08:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear your Mum made such a good recovery! Dad's main problem is he tends to act without thinking at the best of times - it's not really determination, it's a kind of blank spot in his brain that hasn't learned from his own mistakes! So I'm sure he will fall again from getting up and doing stuff without thinking to ask for help...

*hugs and smishes( I'm so glad he's doing much better than you'd expected honey, what a relief!!!

Wishing you and your family all the best. I hope things continue to improve.

He's looking pretty well, you must be so relieved. I hope he continues to improve and the doctors are helpful when you see them today.

[identity profile] indiachick.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
He's looking good! I'm glad it's not as bad as feared, bb. Hoping he makes a full recovery very soon. :)

Yay glad you're all okay :-D

[identity profile] blackrabbit42.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I was away for the weekend and didn't hear that this had happened. I'll keep your dad in my thoughts and prayers.

((((((hugs)))))

Just saw this! I'm happy your dad's get better! <3

[identity profile] bflyw.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't realize your dad had a stroke until now. *hugs* Glad to see him sitting up - that's a good sign.

[identity profile] 999alena.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts are with you and your family- strokes are a bit of a roller coaster and definitely a waiting game, but it's good that your Dad is alert and wanting to be active.
Wishing you all the best

[identity profile] becc-j.livejournal.com 2015-04-20 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad to hear there's some good news for you. Fingers crossed he continues to recover well and no more head bumps!!

[identity profile] ladywillin.livejournal.com 2015-04-27 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
As usual I'm behind with flist so only just offering my best wishes to your poor dad - though he looks perky enough which is nice to see.

Hopefully he'll continue to make good progress each day.

[identity profile] amberdreams.livejournal.com 2015-04-27 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks, he's doing ok, but we've still no idea how long he'll be in hospital. He's still on the wrong ward at the moment so I don't think his treatment has properly started. I'm going back up on Thursday so if there has been no progress by then I'll be kicking up a fuss!
