Mum's been down for a few days to see the pigs and just hang out, so when I heard there was another sketchbook walk today, I suggested we both go. We did have a muddly moment this morning because I thought I was collecting Mum from her hotel, while she'd got it into her head we were meeting at the college where the sketch walk was to start. Remind me never to let her stay in a Premier Inn again when I'm around as they have no phones in the room so you have to tackle reception and get them to go knock on the door (which I knew Mum was unlikely to hear, given that she's deaf as a post without her hearing aids in), and then persuade them to escort you up there and try the door to make sure she's not slipped in the bathroom or had a heart attack or something. And yes, I know she's pretty metally competent and wiry-fit, but she is 82 and a little bit frail and slow... so I did have a horrible few moments panicking there.

Putting that little scare behind us, it was windy, cloudy then bright sunshine down at the marina, we'd lost the sketcher party because we were late, but then bumped into them in a cafe that has a junior pig. So we got our free sketch book and pencil, and had a wander round to produce these.

Mine:
Tall ship detail - 4b pencil
Tall ship detail (Earl of Pembroke out of Bristol)
Customs House (early 19th C) - biro
Custom House, Ipswich
Dingy racing in biro - blooming things are nippy, wouldn't keep still!
Dingy racing
Life boat on a Thames barge - back to the 4B pencil
Thames barge life boat
And these are Mum's:
Tall ship rigging

Custom House architrave

Custom house and small boats

I know Mum hasn't drawn anything since she did an art course (Painting for the Terrified! LOL) at least 10-15 years ago, so it was good to see her enjoying it. Maybe she'll go join the sketching group at home now.

Great sketches, and interesting to see both yours and your mum's of similar subjects. I love the rougher lines of the 4B pencil and the ship details are my favorite; your ropes are spot on and you caught so many details! Looks like you had a good time, despite the bumpy start (Oh, mothers and daughters, it sounds familiar;)

It's like role reversal when they get to a certain age, suddenly it's them making us worry instead of the other way round. I suppose that's only fair!

Maybe you should go in for an Age of Sail AU. Those are some nice details.

You have pigs?

We have a pig trail round town at the moment, giant painted pigs, of which I did one. They are only here until 2nd September and Mum was keen to come down and see them in all their glory! (beelikej came last weekend and has made a start on an excellent blog post cataloguing most of the pigs).

Oh, yes. I remember now. Your pig designs were lovely.

Though live pigs would also be a great addition to your lifestyle. /impractical suggestions

If I were to add pigs to my life they'd be of the guinea variety :D

These are great and it's fun to see yours and your Mum's side by side. It's fun to see what different details people focus on. I love ships and the rope details you've captured are awesome. My favorite is the racing dingy. I really like the feeling of motion captured in the sail, flag and water.

Aw thanks! The dingy was an afterthought, I was trying to be a bit more daring! So it's encouraging that you like it.

Coffee always helps, how great that you caught up with the group. I love the sketches. The dingy really appeals to me with it's lone occupant. Your mum's dingy is a great little sketch too. I love the idea of an art course for the terrified!

Art for the terrified is an awesome idea - I should probably do a maths for the terrified myself.

A sketchbook walk? I've never heard of such a thing, but it sounds very cool. And you and your mom both produced some marvelous sketches. I am impressed.

Yep, I think it's some sort of (possibly) nationally funded thing - something to do with encouraging people to get outside and walk as well as art. They held one and now there's a mini series of them locally.

It's interesting to see both yours and your Mama's styles. there's some similarities but some differences too :) I'm glad she and you had such a good time, sans the slight muddle in the premier inn.

How wonderful to see sketches from both you and your Mum - you both have a great eye! And I love that biro boat!!!!

Your mum's sketches are lovely, she should think about joining an art class again. I love your sketches of the Thames Barge lifeboat, we often go to Maldon and there are always lots of barges there.

I didn't think you were that close to Maldon - the only time I've been there was for the huge festival commemorating the Battle of Maldon a few years ago. It was pretty good, Vikings from all over the place came, and loads of Anglo Saxon re-enactors too.

I think I've been to Maldon at least once a year since I was tiny! My aunt and cousins live in Tollesbury, a village about 20 mins from there. It takes us about an hour and a half to get there. Lovely place, makes me wish I had artistic talent so I could capture the boats and the church.
