amberdreams: (Bum)

I was on tumblr the other day and I came across some writing advice in the form of a long list. I didn't make a note of the blog I was on, or copy the list itself but basically, it went along the lines of:
By all means, include African Americans in your story - BUT do not presume to tell their story, it is theirs to tell.
Include Native Americans in your story but do not presume to tell their story, it is theirs to tell.
Include gay men in your story but do not presume to tell their story, it is theirs to tell.
Include transgender characters in your story but do not presume to tell their story, it is theirs to tell...
and so on.

I'm sure you get the gist, and the point they were making.

At first sight, I was nodding in agreement - this is merely an extention of the old adage 'write what you know', isn't it? So yeah, I could see some validity in what they were saying. But then I got to thinking. Surely, by the time I'd eliminated all the categories of people in their list whose stories I was not qualified to tell by dint of being who I am, the only protagonist remaining for my stories would have to be a short, fat, middle aged white woman.

Who the hell wants to read about me? I (and everyone else) would be reduced to self insert fic, which I abhore.

I feel suddenly I'm sounding like a Daily Mail reader, but surely this is political correctness gone mad.

Or am I missing something here?

Feel free to pitch in!

Stolen from indiachick, because this is just too funny.

Try using Google translate on a passage of your own fic or other writing. Translate your words to Basque or Hungarian or similar, then try translating whatever Google gives you back into English.

This is what Google did to a couple of paragraphs from a WIP. I translated into Basque then back again.

but encouragement like this makes it seem a bit easier.

October's total wasn't great but I'm well chuffed with my year to date one!

You pledge each month to write your target amount of words per day, which can be anything you like, from 100 words upwards. Then you log each day's count and cheer each other on to glory. If we do as we have in previous years, each member can nominate one person to join the comm.

I found this on tumblr, and I, for one, am takng some comfort from it. I shall just continue to endeavour to be a good writer.
Here are those words:

In fanfiction there is a difference between being a good writer and a popular writer.

Just because you can write a well-structured story with dynamic and consistent writing and characters doesn’t mean you will be popular. And sometimes stories that have disorganized plots, mediocre writing, and/or OOC characters will be held up as the greatest things to ever exist.

Just because your writing isn’t popular doesn’t mean you are a bad writer. Don’t ever compromise who you are, who your characters are, your plot, your writing style, anything for the sake of readership.

There are popular writers everywhere. But there are only so many good writers.

What a great speaker and I love the whole sentiment of her talk! I think a lot of writers do this anyhow, talking about their Muse as if this was a capricous external creature, and when you think of the way often stories and characters go in directions you never planned, it does make a lot of sense. Plus taking some of the pressure off is a great idea.

Just something that resonated with me that I found on the interwebz today.  Time to give myself a kick up the bum, methinks.

If you only write when you’re inspired you may be a fairly decent poet, but you’ll never be a novelist because you’re going to have to make your word count today and those words aren’t going to wait for you whether you’re inspired or not.

You have to write when you’re not inspired. And you have to write the scenes that don’t inspire you. And the weird thing is that six months later, a year later, you’ll look back at them and you can’t remember which scenes you wrote when you were inspired and which scenes you just wrote because they had to be written next.

The process of writing can be magical. Mostly it’s a process of putting one word after another.

So I'm doing art for  spn_j2_bigbang and for  sncross_bigbang and now I've signed up for spn_gen_bigbang, as an artist, and now I'm thinking about signing up for at least a mini bang fic too.

I reckon there must be something in the water, as we know that all our food is laced with Leviathan corn syrup, right?

The meme: Post the first sentence (or three) from every WIP you're currently working on, even if it's very short. Then invite people to ask questions about your WIPs. With any luck, you'll get talking about writing, and the motivation to take that WIP one step closer to completion will appear as if by magic!

#1.  Perhaps he should have been more wary.  Should have realised it was a trap.

Scratch that. He knew for certain he’d been the biggest kind of dumbass, and there was no perhaps about it.  But by the time realisation dawned, it was too late and the demons (yes, there was more than one of the bastards) had him pinned, helpless, splayed like a butterfly in an entomologist’s prized collection, up against the warehouse wall.

#2.  Helpless, Dean watches with a pain-blurred sense of detachment as Sam rocks back on his haunches, maintaining the strange sing-song chant, the lighter voice of Ahnah keeping counterpoint with Sam’s tenor.

His little brother’s bulk is silhouetted against the twilight of the white-night solstice, the wide skies still impossibly cerulean blue at midnight.

#3.  Sam fired.  The creature was freakishly fast though, and dodged the shot.  His brother was not so lucky.

#4.   Dean hates fucking rain.

So much so he thinks he might have been a cat in a previous life.  Whatever.

#5.
Jensen couldn’t work out how everything got so messed up. Correction, he couldn’t work out how he had got everything so messed up.  Because it was down to him.

That's all my nascent SPN fics, below are the first lines from my 2 original novel length fics I've been faffing with for the last 2 years.

#6  In the beginning there were no words, there was only light.

In the beginning, they were nameless, formless.  They existed and that was enough.  Then one of them found an opening, slipped through, and discovered – a different world.  This world was one of form, and of matter that had names; with solid earth, air that moved and was breathed by living organic beings; and home to forces that threatened to tear the nameless one apart.

#7

What are you afraid of, Jake Kyle?

Sleeping.

Dying.

Living.

The colour red.

He was dreaming again.

Flames, a woman burning; a man dying, pinned to a kitchen wall.  Screaming.

Nightmares.  And not even his nightmares; they had belonged to someone he had loved.  As if, he thought bitterly, he didn’t have enough of his own.

Mmm I hadn't thought I had as many as 5 works on the go, but actually there were 3 more with a few lines written....

Edited to include my non Supernatural stuff which I had kind of forgotten about.
