I was on tumblr the other day and I came across some writing advice in the form of a long list. I didn't make a note of the blog I was on, or copy the list itself but basically, it went along the lines of:
By all means, include African Americans in your story - BUT do not presume to tell their story, it is theirs to tell.
Include Native Americans in your story but do not presume to tell their story, it is theirs to tell.
Include gay men in your story but do not presume to tell their story, it is theirs to tell.
Include transgender characters in your story but do not presume to tell their story, it is theirs to tell...
and so on.

I'm sure you get the gist, and the point they were making.

At first sight, I was nodding in agreement - this is merely an extention of the old adage 'write what you know', isn't it? So yeah, I could see some validity in what they were saying. But then I got to thinking. Surely, by the time I'd eliminated all the categories of people in their list whose stories I was not qualified to tell by dint of being who I am, the only protagonist remaining for my stories would have to be a short, fat, middle aged white woman.

Who the hell wants to read about me? I (and everyone else) would be reduced to self insert fic, which I abhore.

I feel suddenly I'm sounding like a Daily Mail reader, but surely this is political correctness gone mad.

Or am I missing something here?

Feel free to pitch in!

Stolen from indiachick, because this is just too funny.

Try using Google translate on a passage of your own fic or other writing. Translate your words to Basque or Hungarian or similar, then try translating whatever Google gives you back into English.

This is what Google did to a couple of paragraphs from a WIP. I translated into Basque then back again.

SPN fandom readers and writers

Hey, guys! We’re trying to put together a project for our fandom’s readers and writers, where we’ll be collecting 100 writers to each create a short piece of fic or poetry (gen and canon-compliant) that will then all be compiled into a book that people will be able to get for themselves, with net profits going towards a charitable cause. If you’re interested, you can check out this post for more detailed information, or take a look at our blog pages!

About | FAQ | Theme Info | Submission Guidelines | Sign up as a writer

In the meantime, if you’re at all interested or know people who might be, please reblog this post to spread the word! We want to get as many people as we can on board with this to make it the best final product it can be.

---

i don't know about everyone else, but I'd love to have a book containing your amazing writing, dear flisties, so consider giving this a go! And spread the word.

but encouragement like this makes it seem a bit easier.

Days written: 28
Days written pledged number or more: 27
Total month's count: 11,449
Percent pledged amount written: 395%

YTD count: 114,599

October's total wasn't great but I'm well chuffed with my year to date one!

If anyone on my flist isn't in the
12mowrimo community and thinks they might like to join us next year, let me know. It's a friendly gang of writers ably looked after by de_nugis and Statified by monicawoe. You pledge each month to write your target amount of words per day, which can be anything you like, from 100 words upwards. Then you log each day's count and cheer each other on to glory. If we do as we have in previous years, each member can nominate one person to join the comm.

What a great speaker and I love the whole sentiment of her talk! I think a lot of writers do this anyhow, talking about their Muse as if this was a capricous external creature, and when you think of the way often stories and characters go in directions you never planned, it does make a lot of sense. Plus taking some of the pressure off is a great idea.

Author Elizabeth Gilbert discusses the psychological damage of the modern "genius" and perhaps a healthier way to negotiate our creative tendancies. With a really amusing Tom Waits story in the mix.

Like we all need extra challenges right now, right? But I thought this sounded like fun (the original was stolen from thewritepractice.com - go there if you want to do the real one). I find amusing the assumption that we only have one bookshelf, but apart from that...

I'm feeling hot and grotty - fourth blooming cold of the year, darlings! Dammit. But I will not allow this stupid sniffling to get me down.

Here's a bit of encouragement for all my writing flisties instead.

Just something that resonated with me that I found on the interwebz today.  Time to give myself a kick up the bum, methinks.

If you only write when you’re inspired you may be a fairly decent poet, but you’ll never be a novelist because you’re going to have to make your word count today and those words aren’t going to wait for you whether you’re inspired or not.

You have to write when you’re not inspired. And you have to write the scenes that don’t inspire you. And the weird thing is that six months later, a year later, you’ll look back at them and you can’t remember which scenes you wrote when you were inspired and which scenes you just wrote because they had to be written next.

The process of writing can be magical. Mostly it’s a process of putting one word after another.

So I'm doing art for  spn_j2_bigbang and for  sncross_bigbang and now I've signed up for spn_gen_bigbang, as an artist, and now I'm thinking about signing up for at least a mini bang fic too.

I reckon there must be something in the water, as we know that all our food is laced with Leviathan corn syrup, right?
